A beautifully designed polymer clay cutter can make creating earrings much quicker and easier—but the cutter is only one part of achieving a crisp, professional result.

If your clay sticks inside the cutter, the edges look slightly rough or a detailed cutter doesn’t cut completely through the slab on the first attempt, don’t panic. These are common parts of working with polymer clay, particularly when you begin using smaller, thinner or more detailed designs.

The secret to getting clean cuts with polymer clay cutters is to start with a beginner-friendly shape, use properly conditioned clay, work on a glossy ceramic tile, create an even slab and press the cutter using the correct technique.

Release agents, the two-cut method and a little finishing after baking can take care of most remaining imperfections.

1. Start with beginner-friendly clay cutter shapes

Not every polymer clay cutter requires the same level of experience.

When you’re starting out, choose simple, solid shapes without very thin sections, tiny internal spaces or detailed built-in impressions. These cutters are easier to press evenly, release from the clay and lift without distortion.

Once you’re comfortable producing clean, consistent components, you can gradually introduce cutters with thinner sections, internal cut-outs and detailed built-in stamps.

2. Use a glossy ceramic tile as your work surface

Your work surface is one of the most important—and often overlooked—parts of getting a clean cut.

We prefer to work on simple, glossy ceramic tiles. You can find these inexpensively at most hardware stores or tile shops, and you don’t need anything fancy.

A glossy tile provides a smooth, firm surface and helps the polymer clay adhere while you cut. This adhesion is important because the clay needs to remain on the tile when you lift the cutter away.

If the slab lifts with the cutter, the component is much more likely to stretch, distort or become caught inside the cutting edge.

Avoid matte, textured or uneven tiles. These may not allow the clay to adhere properly and can transfer unwanted texture onto the back of your components.

To improve adhesion:

  1. Make sure the tile is clean and free from dust.

  2. Place the conditioned clay directly onto the glossy surface.

  3. Roll firmly and evenly over the slab with an acrylic roller.

  4. Work from the centre outwards to remove trapped air.

  5. Check that the slab is lying completely flat and doesn’t slide across the tile.

Don’t put cornflour underneath the slab. The bottom of the clay needs to adhere to the tile; release agents should only be used on the top surface or cutter.

If possible, cut and bake your components directly on the same tile. Moving them fewer times helps preserve their shape.

3. Properly condition your polymer clay

Before cutting your shapes, the polymer clay needs to be properly conditioned.

Conditioning means warming and working the clay until it becomes smooth, pliable and consistent. This can be done with your hands, an acrylic roller or a pasta machine.

Properly conditioned clay should:

  • Bend without immediately cracking.

  • Feel smooth and even.

  • Roll into a slab without crumbly edges.

  • Contain no hard lumps, streaks or dry patches.

Clay that hasn’t been conditioned enough may crack, crumble or produce rough edges. However, clay can also become too warm and soft if handled for too long—particularly in warm climates.

If the clay feels sticky, very soft or difficult to lift, allow it to rest before cutting. You can also place the slab in the refrigerator for a few minutes to help it firm up.

The goal is clay that is flexible enough to cut cleanly but firm enough to hold its shape.

4. Roll an even polymer clay slab

An uneven slab can produce wonky components, inconsistent edges and earrings that don’t match.

A pasta machine is an excellent way to establish a consistent base thickness. After rolling, place the slab onto your glossy tile and use an acrylic roller to improve adhesion and smooth out any remaining marks.

You can also use depth guides on either side of the clay. The guides prevent the roller from pressing the slab thinner in some places than others.

There isn’t one perfect slab thickness for every project. The best thickness will depend on the size of the component, clay brand, design and intended use.

As a general guide:

  • A 3 mm slab works well for many lightweight earring components.

  • A 4.5 mm slab creates a thicker, more substantial component.

  • Very large or heavily textured pieces may require additional thickness or support.

Consistency is more important than choosing one universal measurement.

5. Let warm or soft clay rest before cutting

Freshly conditioned clay may still be warm from your hands or pasta machine. Warm clay is softer, stickier and more likely to distort.

Allow the slab to rest at room temperature, or chill it briefly if necessary. You want it firm, not frozen or brittle.

This is especially helpful when:

  • Working in warm or humid weather.

  • Using a naturally soft clay.

  • Cutting very small shapes.

  • Using detailed or imprint cutters.

  • Cutting a slab containing small decorative elements.

  • Making matching pairs that need to retain exactly the same proportions.

6. Press the cutter straight down

Once the slab is firmly adhered to your tile, position the cutter carefully.

Apply firm, even pressure directly downwards. Avoid pressing more heavily on one side, as this can create an incomplete or uneven cut.

For the cleanest result:

  1. Position the cutter before it touches the clay.

  2. Press directly down with even pressure.

  3. Make sure the cutting edge reaches the tile.

  4. Lift the cutter directly upwards.

Avoid twisting the cutter. Twisting can drag the clay, blur fine details and distort the finished shape.

7. Understand why detailed cutters can be more challenging

Cutters with built-in stamps and detailed impressions behave differently from simple outline cutters.

The internal stamp contains additional surfaces that come into contact with the clay. These details can grip the clay or create resistance before the outside cutting edge has travelled completely through the slab.

This is more likely to happen with:

  • Detailed floral cutters.

  • Animal and character designs.

  • Fine embossed patterns.

  • Small imprint cutters.

  • Designs containing thin sections.

  • Cutters with multiple internal details.

This doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem with the cutter. It is simply a limitation of combining detailed stamping and cutting into one tool.

A release agent and the two-cut method can help, but some designs will naturally require more patience and finishing than a simple shape from the Basics Collection.

8. Use the two-cut method for detailed cutters

For detailed or built-in stamp cutters, try what is commonly called the two-cut method or two-stage press.

Rather than forcing the cutter through the clay in one movement, make the cut in two controlled stages.

How to use the two-cut method

  1. Make sure the slab is firmly adhered to a glossy ceramic tile.

  2. Apply a very light coating of cornflour to the clay or cutter.

  3. Position the cutter carefully.

  4. Press it approximately halfway into the slab.

  5. Lift the cutter directly upwards without twisting.

  6. Apply another very light dusting of cornflour if necessary.

  7. Carefully place the cutter back into the existing impression.

  8. Press straight down until the cutting edge reaches the tile.

  9. Lift the cutter directly upwards.

The first press establishes the design and begins the cut. The second press completes it without forcing all the detailed surfaces into the clay at once.

Take care to place the cutter back into exactly the same impression. Don’t rotate or shift it between presses.

9. Use release agents sparingly

If the clay continues to stick inside the cutter, a small amount of release agent can help.

The key word is small. Too much powder or liquid can dull detailed impressions and affect the surface of your clay.

Cornflour or cornstarch

Cornflour—known as cornstarch in some countries—creates a fine barrier between the clay and cutter.

For a controlled application, use the Kit & Co. Dusting Brush to apply a light, even coating over the clay. Our Cornstarch Tapper Box & Lid can also be used to give the cutter a controlled coating without placing it into a large bowl of loose powder.

Tap or brush away visible excess before cutting. You only need a barely visible layer.

Too much cornflour can:

  • Settle inside detailed impressions.

  • Dull the clay’s surface.

  • Reduce the sharpness of stamped details.

  • Create additional cleaning work.

Water

A very light mist of water can reduce friction between the clay and cutter.

Avoid saturating the clay. Water may not be suitable for every technique—particularly water transfers or moisture-sensitive surface decorations—so test it first.

Plastic wrap

Place a piece of thin plastic wrap over the clay before pressing in the cutter.

Plastic wrap helps prevent sticking and creates soft, rounded or pillowed edges. This can be beautiful for simple studs and organic shapes.

However, it won’t produce the same crisp edge as cutting directly into the clay. Use it when you intentionally want a rounded finish rather than an ultra-sharp cut.

Which polymer clay release method is best?

Choose according to the finish and cutter you’re using:

  • For the sharpest edge, cool the clay and cut without a release agent.

  • For detailed imprint cutters, try a light coating of cornflour.

  • For mild sticking, use a very light mist of water.

  • For rounded edges, use plastic wrap.

  • For difficult detailed cutters, combine cornflour with the two-cut method.

Always test your chosen release method on scrap clay first.

10. Remove the surrounding clay before lifting the component

After cutting, remove the surrounding excess clay before lifting the individual component.

This leaves the shape sitting flat on the tile and reduces the risk of stretching it.

If you need to move the component, slide a thin tissue blade underneath it rather than pulling it up with your fingers.

This is particularly important for:

  • Long, narrow dangles.

  • Organic or asymmetrical shapes.

  • Thin connector pieces.

  • Small studs.

  • Detailed stamped components.

If the piece is already positioned correctly on an oven-safe tile, you can bake it without moving it.

11. Don’t expect every shape to emerge perfectly finished

A sharp cutter reduces finishing work, but it doesn’t mean every component will come out absolutely perfect every time.

Polymer clay is soft and flexible. The clay brand, temperature, slab thickness, cutter complexity and your technique will all affect the result.

Simple cutters should generally produce a very clean edge. Detailed cutters, micro cutters and designs with thin sections may leave:

  • A fine fringe around the bottom.

  • A slightly rough area.

  • A thin connection where the cutter didn’t pass completely through.

  • Small marks where the clay released from an impression.

These are normal finishing issues, not disasters.

Minor imperfections can usually be corrected after baking by:

  • Wet-sanding the edge with fine wet-and-dry sandpaper.

  • Carefully trimming a thin fringe with a sharp craft knife.

  • Shaving away a small uneven area with a sharp blade.

  • Using a rotary tool for larger production batches.

When using a craft knife, place the component on a secure surface and always cut away from your fingers.

The aim is to minimise finishing—not necessarily eliminate it completely.

12. Clean your polymer clay cutters correctly

Small pieces of raw clay can collect inside the cutting edge or detailed parts of a cutter. If they aren’t removed, they may interfere with the next cut.

Start by using a soft, dry brush to remove loose clay. A cotton bud or soft tool can help with small areas, but be gentle around fine cutting edges and imprint details.

For a more thorough clean:

  1. Wash the cutter by hand in cool or lukewarm water.

  2. Use a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid.

  3. Gently clean it with a soft brush.

  4. Rinse and dry it thoroughly before storage.

Kit & Co. cutters are 3D-printed in PLA, so they shouldn’t be exposed to high temperatures.

Do not put PLA cutters in:

  • A dishwasher.

  • Boiling or very hot water.

  • An oven.

  • Direct sunlight for extended periods.

  • A hot car or other high-temperature environment.

Avoid harsh solvents and don’t scrape the fine edge with metal tools. Store cutters flat or in a sturdy container where they won’t be crushed or bent.

Why are my polymer clay cutter edges rough?

Rough or jagged edges can be caused by:

  • Clay that hasn’t been conditioned evenly.

  • Clay that is too cold, dry or crumbly.

  • An uneven slab.

  • Poor adhesion between the clay and tile.

  • Cutting on a soft or textured surface.

  • Failing to press the cutter completely through.

  • Pulling or twisting the cutter sideways.

Condition the clay thoroughly, roll it onto a glossy tile and press the cutter straight down. Any small remaining imperfections can be sanded or trimmed after baking.

Why does my clay remain inside the cutter?

The clay may be too warm or soft, the slab might not be adhered properly to the tile or the cutter may contain detailed internal impressions that grip the clay.

Allow the slab to rest, roll it firmly onto a glossy tile and apply a very light coating of cornflour. For detailed cutters, use the two-cut method.

Why didn’t my detailed cutter cut completely through?

Built-in stamps make more contact with the clay than a simple outline cutter. This additional surface area can create resistance before the cutting edge reaches the tile.

Make sure the slab is firmly adhered, apply a light release agent and use the two-cut method. If a very fine section remains after baking, it can usually be trimmed carefully with a craft knife or removed with sandpaper.

Why do my clay shapes stretch when I lift them?

Stretching usually happens when the clay is too soft, the slab isn’t properly adhered or the component is lifted with your fingers.

Firm the clay before cutting, improve its adhesion to the glossy tile, remove the surrounding slab first and slide a tissue blade underneath the component if it needs to be moved.

Are detailed polymer clay cutters suitable for beginners?

Beginners will generally find simple, solid cutters easier to use.
