How to store polymer clay

1. Keep it Cool and Dry: Polymer clay should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Excessive heat can cause the clay to become soft or even cure prematurely, affecting its usability.

2. Dust-Proof Containers: Store polymer clay lidded containers to prevent dust, dirt, and moisture from getting in. Mason jars, plastic containers with tight-sealing lids, or ziplock bags can work well for this purpose.

3. Separate Colors: If you have multiple colors of polymer clay, store them separately to prevent color contamination. You can use individual containers or dividers within a larger container to keep the colors separated.

   

4. Avoid Contact with Certain Materials: Some materials, such as certain plastics, certain metals, and some types of fabric, can react with polymer clay and cause it to degrade or become discolored. In particular the ingredients in polymer clay can react with Polystyrene. This is the lightweight, clear, rigid, brittle plastic that you’re familiar with as it’s used to make CD and DVD cases. It's also used to make many cute clear storage boxes for makeup and jewellery. Store polymer clay away from these materials to avoid any adverse reactions.

5. Check Expiration Dates: While polymer clay generally has a long shelf life, it's still a good idea to check the expiration dates on the packaging, especially if it has been stored for a long time. Expired clay may become crumbly or difficult to work with.

6. Knead Before Use: If polymer clay has been stored for an extended period, it may become slightly stiff. Knead the clay thoroughly before use to restore its pliability and ensure even consistency.
